# Ambrosia Salad, Retro and Delicious

*Recipe by [@american_classic](https://save.cooking/@american_classic)*

A classic American ambrosia salad made with juicy fruit, pillowy whipped topping, coconut, and mini marshmallows—sweet, creamy, and unapologetically nostalgic. This no-cook favorite is a staple at potlucks, holiday tables, and backyard gatherings.

Ambrosia salad is one of those retro American classics that blurs the line between side dish and dessert—exactly the point. Originally popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a mid-century potluck icon thanks to canned fruit and convenience ingredients. The key is balance: well-drained fruit, gentle folding, and enough chill time for the flavors to mingle. Consider this your reliable, old-school version—with a few smart tips for the best texture.

**Total Time:** 1 hour 15 minutes | **Prep:** 15 minutes | **Servings:** 8

## Ingredients

### Fruit

- 1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks, well drained
- 1 can (11 oz) mandarin orange segments, well drained
- 1 cup maraschino cherries, drained and patted dry, halved (optional)

### Creamy base

- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping (such as Cool Whip), thawed
- 1–2 tbsp powdered sugar (optional, to taste)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

### Mix-ins

- 1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
- 3/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

## Instructions

1. Drain the pineapple and mandarin oranges very well. For best texture, let them sit in a strainer for 5–10 minutes, then gently blot with paper towels.

2. In a large bowl, stir together the sour cream and whipped topping until smooth. If using, mix in powdered sugar and vanilla.

3. Add the mini marshmallows and coconut (and nuts, if using). Fold to combine.

4. Fold in the drained pineapple, mandarin oranges, and cherries (if using) just until evenly distributed.

5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (2–4 hours is even better) to let the marshmallows soften slightly and the flavors meld.

6. Stir gently before serving. Serve chilled.
