# Root Beer Floats for Kids and Grownups

*Recipe by [@american_classic](https://save.cooking/@american_classic)*

A classic American root beer float—cold, creamy, and fizzy—with simple options for kid-friendly fun and a grownup twist. Learn the small technique choices that make the foam taller, the ice cream creamier, and the float less likely to overflow.

The root beer float is one of America’s easiest soda fountain classics: just root beer and vanilla ice cream, yet the chemistry feels like magic. Pouring the soda over ice cream creates a foamy head as carbonation releases and the ice cream melts into a creamy “float.” With a few smart choices—cold ingredients, the right glass, and a gentle pour—you get a taller foam and a smoother sip every time.

**Total Time:** 5 minutes | **Prep:** 5 minutes | **Servings:** 2

## Ingredients

### Classic Float (per serving)

- 1 tall chilled glass (12–16 oz)
- 1 1/2 cups (12 oz) very cold root beer
- 2–3 scoops vanilla ice cream (about 3/4 cup)
- Optional: whipped cream
- Optional: maraschino cherry

### Kid-Friendly Options (choose one or more)

- Chocolate syrup, for drizzling inside the glass
- Rainbow sprinkles
- Mini marshmallows (a small handful)
- Chocolate wafer cookie or straw for serving

### Grownup Options (choose one)

- 1 oz bourbon, added to the glass before pouring root beer
- 1 oz spiced rum, added to the glass before pouring root beer
- 1 oz vanilla vodka, added to the glass before pouring root beer
- Pinch of flaky salt on top (optional, enhances sweetness)

## Instructions

1. Chill your glasses (and the root beer) for best foam control. A cold glass slows melting and helps the float stay creamy instead of watery.

2. If using kid-friendly add-ins like chocolate syrup, drizzle a little inside the glass now. If making a grownup float, add 1 oz of your chosen spirit to the empty glass.

3. Add 2–3 scoops of vanilla ice cream to each glass. Aim for scoops that sit above the rim slightly—this helps create the classic soda-fountain look.

4. Pour the root beer slowly down the side of the glass (not directly onto the ice cream) to reduce overflow while still building a foamy head. Pause if the foam rises quickly, then continue until you’ve added about 12 oz per serving.

5. Top as desired: whipped cream, a cherry, sprinkles, or a few mini marshmallows. Serve immediately with a long spoon and a straw.
